Lifting and haulage for the UK's civil engineering sector.

Structural steel erection sits in-house at Buzzard, not subcontracted out, which matters on a civil engineering programme where the crane, the traffic management and the site team all need to move together. Road closures, temporary works and a public interface that doesn’t forgive a late start are normal here, not exceptions. Buzzard runs the crane hire, contract lifting and haulage as one job, not three separate bookings, on civil engineering sites across the UK.

The operating environment.

A civil engineering site is rarely just a crane and a load. It’s traffic, the public, temporary works and a programme that moves whether the lift is ready or not. Road closures need coordinating, pedestrians and vehicles need managing around the exclusion zone, and adjacent structures or live carriageways often sit closer than anyone would choose. Temporary works designs have to be checked and approved before a single outrigger goes down, and every other trade on site has its own deadline pulling against yours. Buzzard plans lifts that fit that reality, working alongside principal contractors so the programme keeps moving.

Road closures and traffic management

Every closure needs sign-off from whichever highway authority holds that stretch of road, and the paperwork looks different depending which one it is. We handle that coordination as part of the lift, not as a separate task for your team.

A public interface that doesn't forgive a late start

Pedestrians and traffic don’t pause because a crane’s on site. Barriers, banksmen and a plan for the public go in before the first lift, on urban sites especially.

Hiab Hire 7

Temporary works, checked properly

Piling mats, propping and temporary works get designed and checked against the ground conditions on that specific site. Not assumed from the last job down the road.

Haulage Home

Tight urban access

Getting a mobile crane or an abnormal load through a city centre, a live rail site or a restricted plot is its own piece of planning, done before the crane is booked.

Steel erection, held in-house

Structural steel erection is a capability we hold ourselves, not something we subcontract and then coordinate around. That’s one less interface for your programme to manage.

Compliance that follows the programme, not just the crane.

LOLER 1998 governs every lift we do, wherever it is. On civil engineering sites we also work within CDM 2015, take instruction from the principal contractor, and coordinate traffic management and temporary works sign-off with whichever authority the closure sits under.

Typical lifts we handle.

Six kinds of lift come up again and again across the UK’s civil engineering sites. Each one brings its own mix of weight, access and exclusion zones, and each demands a plan that works around traffic, the public and a live programme, not against them.

01

Structural steel erection

Frames, portals and structural steel erected as an in-house capability, not a subcontracted interface to manage.

02

Precast and beam placement

Precast panels and beams lifted and set to line and level, tolerances checked before the lift, not after.

03

Bridge components

Bridge beams, deck sections and parapets lifted into position around possessions and closures that won’t move.

04

Plant and cabin moves

Site cabins, welfare units and plant relocated as a programme progresses, without holding up the trades around them.

05

Piling rig support

Positioning and supporting piling rigs on made ground or a restricted plot, mats and bearing pressure checked first.

06

Site establishment

Cranes, welfare and materials mobilised for site set-up, sequenced to the programme rather than arriving all at once.

Our services on a civil engineering site.

Six services, coordinated as one operation rather than six separate bookings. One project manager, one programme and one point of contact carry the work from planning through to completion, so nothing is lost between road closures, temporary works and other trades. Whatever the mix of lifting or transport required, the same team always delivers it, working to the same plan throughout.

Contract Lifting

A full lift plan and Appointed Person cover for steel erection and bridge lifts where the programme has no slack.

Crane Hire

Crane capacity sized for structural steel and precast work on urban and infrastructure sites.

HIAB Hire

ALLMI-trained HIAB operators for materials moving on and off a site that’s still being built.

Haulage

Abnormal load haulage for steel, precast and bridge components, route survey and escort done first.

Specialist Personnel Supply

Appointed Persons, lift supervisors, riggers and slinger/signallers used to working a public interface.

Plant & Equipment Hire

Crane mats and rigging equipment sized for made ground and restricted urban plots.

Not sure what a piling mat or a restricted plot can actually take? Our ground bearing pressure calculator and section load charts answer that before the crane turns up, not after.

Civil engineering FAQ's.

Yes. Structural steel erection is an in-house capability, not something we subcontract and coordinate around. Send us the frame drawings and we’ll come back with a lift plan, not just a quote.

Yes. We handle the coordination with whichever highway authority holds that stretch of road as part of the job, not as a separate task for your team to chase.

Yes. Barriers, banksmen and a plan for pedestrians and traffic go in before the first lift, on urban sites especially, so the public interface isn’t an afterthought.

Yes. Piling mats, propping and temporary works are designed and checked against the ground conditions on that specific site, rather than assumed from a previous job.

Yes. That’s usually how we prefer to work. One lift plan, one Appointed Person and one team running the transport and the lift removes the handover gaps that cause most delays.

Yes. Route survey and access planning happen before the crane’s booked, not after it’s arrived and found the gate’s too narrow.

Got structural steel or a bridge lift coming up? Let's plan it before the programme moves again.

One call gets you a crane, a lift plan and a haulage booking, coordinated by one team before you’re on site.
